Seducing the Boys Club or Real Simple Solutions

Seducing the Boys Club: Uncensored Tactics from a Woman at the Top

Author: Nina DiSesa

Fact #1: Forty years after the feminist revolution, fewer than 2 percent of Fortune 1000 CEOs are women.
Fact #2: The playing field is not level.
Fact #3: You need to get over this.

From the woman who became chairman of the flagship office of the largest advertising agency network in the world comes a wry reality check on how to get ahead and thrive in the testosterone-driven business arena.

Nina DiSesa is a master communicator, a ceiling crasher, and one of the most successful women in the corporate world. She is also a big-time realist who has figured out that S&M-seduction and manipulation-is the secret to winning over (and surpassing) the big guys. In Seducing the Boys Club, DiSesa shows that you can, in fact, leave your male colleagues in the dust-but not by following the rules you learned in business school.
By playing the roles of den mother, fraternity brother, little sister, and hard-nosed boss, DiSesa navigated the choppy, macho-minded waters of the workplace. All the "bad boys" in her life-and there are many-have provided a wealth of devilishly amusing stories and cautionary tales that DiSesa is only too happy to pass on. Ah, revenge can be sweet, but the truth is that she came to love those boys as much as they love her-which is the whole point.

DiSesa asserts that women need to meld their feminine characteristics (nurturing, compassion, listening) with the traits of their male counterparts (competitiveness, decisiveness, combativeness) to expand their professional horizons. In Seducing the Boys Club, DiSesa shares her practical, outrageous, and even controversial maxims for making it, including:

• Learn to appreciate men. Menlike women who like them.
• Remember that women are biologically wired to succeed.
• If you want to make a name for yourself, find a mess and fix it. A secure and comfortable job only holds you back.
• Don't assume that men never listen. They listen like a dog does.
• Don't be a quiet achiever.
• Act brave and you will look brave.
• Screw the rules. Make up your own.

Whether dead-on funny or deadly serious, DiSesa is always on her game, always on message, and absolutely on target as she arms women with the can-do confidence and no-compromises attitude they need to climb as high as their ambition can carry them-while keeping their standards impeccable and their integrity intact. Not for women only, this book should be read by men, too . . . though it won't give them any defense against a woman who can truly seduce a boys club!

Publishers Weekly

Chairman of McCann Erickson New York, part of one of the largest advertising networks in the world, DiSesa delivers a one-on-one mentoring session on working with, competing against and managing both men and women. Confirming that her nature is to nurture, she is thoughtful and confessional as DiSesa looks back at how she learned to defy her own bad habits-including in-office meltdowns-and to substitute charm in their stead. DiSesa also readily shares insights gained from such nongender-based blunders as letting clients take a break in the middle of a presentation (the clients failed to return to the conference room). Though she refers to manipulating and seducing and learning to exhibit "male" behavior throughout, DiSesa's hard work, talent and insight into human nature appear to be the real drivers behind her success. That DiSesa has managed to package her experiences into accessible form creates a welcome opportunity for both women and men hoping to duplicate her success. (Feb.)

Good Guys and Bad Guys or Winners Never Cheat

Good Guys and Bad Guys: Behind the Scenes with the Saints and Scoundrels of American Business (and Everything in Between)

Author: Joe Nocera

A fascinating collection of profiles by one of America's leading business journalists

For three decades, in major publications such as Texas Monthly, Esquire, Fortune, and now The New York Times, Joe Nocera has reported on the people who dominate the business world, for better or worse. Everyone from Warren Buffett to T. Boone Pickens to George Steinbrenner to Ken Lay has fallen under his microscope.

Now, in this collection of his best work, he explores how we define good guys and bad guys in business and concludes that things are often not what they seem.

It turns out that there are surprisingly good qualities in classic villains like junk bond king Michael Milken and notorious stock analyst Henry Blodget. And some business celebrities who are widely admired, such as Steve Jobs, are not quite the good guys they appear to be on the surface.

Good Guys and Bad Guys also offers a fresh perspective on some of today's biggest controversies, such as global warming, Apple's iPhone, CEO compensation, the tobacco industry, short sellers, and much more.

Slate - Jack Shafer

Nocera demystifies the world of business with original thinking, brainy reporting, and the ability to see around corners. . . . Nocera knows that persuasion isn't about haranguing, that it's better to lead the reader toward your conclusion and depart gracefully rather than hammer him over the head with it.

Winners Never Cheat: Everyday Values We Learned as Children (But May Have Forgotten)

Author: Jon M Huntsman

Next time someone tells you business can't be done ethically -- corners must be cut, negotiations can't be honest -- hand them Jon Huntsman's new book. He started with practically nothing, and made it to Forbes'list of America's Top 100 richest people. Huntsman's generous about sharing the credit, but in the 21st century, he's the nearest thing to a self-made multi-billionaire. Now, he presents the lessons of a lifetime: a passionate, inspirational manifesto for returning to the days when your word was your bond, a handshake was sacred, and swarms of lawyers weren't needed to back it up. This is no mere exhortation: it's a practical business book about how to listen to your moral compass, even as others ignore theirs. It's about how you build teams with the highest values, share success, take responsibility, and earn the rewards that only come with giving back. Huntsman's built his career and fortune on these principles. You don't live these principles just to 'succeed': you live them because they're right. But in an age of non-stop business scandal, Huntsman's life proves honesty is more than right: it's the biggest competitive differentiator.

Book about: The Power of Place or Purity and Exile

Do You Matter?: How Great Design Will Make People Love Your Company

Author: Robert Brunner

“Definitely, a game changer! Design experience is the power shift to our era what mass marketing was to the last century.”

John Sculley former CEO, Pepsi and Apple

“Great design is about creating a deep relationship with your customers. If you don’t, you’re roadkill. This book shows you how and much, much more. Be prepared to have your mind blown.”

Bill Burnett Executive Director, Design Program, Stanford University

“Design is the last great differentiator, and yet so few really understand it. Do You Matter? offers a marvelous series of direct, in-your-face observations and drives home the means to an absolutely integrated design strategy.”

Ray Riley Design GM, Entertainment and Devices, Microsoft

“This book will challenge you to ask and answer what arguably are the most important questions an executive can ponder today. So open up.”

Noah Kerner CEO, Noise and coauthor, Chasing Cool

More and more companies are coming to understand the competitive advantage offered by outstanding design. With this, you can create products, services, and experiences that truly matter to your customers' lives and thereby drive powerful, sustainable improvements in business performance. But delivering great designs is not easy. Many companies accomplish it once, or twice; few do it consistently. The secret: building a truly design-driven business, in which design is central to everything you do. Do You Matter? shows how to do precisely that. Legendary industrialdesigner Robert Brunner (who laid the groundwork for Apple's brilliant design language) and Stewart Emery (Success Built to Last) begin by making an incontrovertible case for the power of design in making emotional connections, deepening relationships, and strengthening brands. You'll learn what it really means to be "design-driven" and how that translates into action at Nike, Apple, BMW and IKEA. You'll learn design-driven techniques for managing your entire experience chain; define effective design strategies and languages; and learn how to manage design from the top, encouraging "risky" design innovations that lead to entirely new markets. The authors show how (and how not) to use research; how to extend design values into marketing, manufacturing, and beyond; and how to keep building on your progress, truly "baking" design into all your processes and culture.

Publishers Weekly

In this mostly well-argued book, industrial design expert Brunner and corporate consultant Emery (Success Built to Last) put forth a design manifesto: building a successful company is not just about the shiny end product but about designing every aspect of the customer's experience. By paying just as much attention to store design, Web sites and customer support as to the product or service being sold, a company can build an emotional relationship with its customers and so secure market share for life. They contend that design should influence every single business decision and-if done right-will lead consumers to become truly invested, and willing to pay extra. The authors return again and again to several well-known brand names as exemplars of their theory. Ikea, Samsung and Whole Foods are all given props, though highest praise is reserved for Brunner's old employer, Apple, so much so that at times this book reads like an Apple promotional product. Combining their knowledge of design, organizational structure, branding and product placement, the authors have essentially repackaged a simple idea: the customer's feelings matter. (Sept.)

Inside Steves Brain or Its Not How Good You Are Its How Good You Want to Be

Inside Steve's Brain

Author: Leander Kahney

An insider's guide to the unique leadership style of Steve Jobs, the driving force behind the success of Apple and Pixar

Steve Jobs is technology's most famous CEO, the man who revolutionized computers in the 1970s and 80s (with the Apple II and the Mac), animated movies in the 1990s (with Pixar), and digital music in the 2000s (with the iPod and iTunes). He's also one of the most controversial CEOs in history, allegedly throwing epic tantrums, firing staff in elevators, and taking credit for other people's achievements.

So what's the real story? According to Leander Kahney, who has covered Jobs since the early 1990s as a reporter, editor, and book author, he's a fascinating bundle of contradictions.

He's an elitist who thinks most people are bozos—but he makes gadgets so easy to use, a bozo can master them.

He's a mercurial obsessive with a filthy temper—but he forges deep partnerships with creative geniuses like Steve Wozniak, Jonathan Ive, and John Lasseter.

He's a Buddhist and antimaterialist—but he produces mass-market products in Asian factories, and he promotes them with absolute mastery of the crassest medium, advertising.

In short, Jobs has embraced the personality traits that some consider flaws—narcissism, perfectionism, total faith in his intuition—to lead Apple and Pixar to triumph against steep odds. And in the process, he has become a self-made billionaire.

After interviewing more Apple insiders than any previous author, Kahney has distilled the principles that guide Jobs as he launches killer products, attracts fanatically loyal customers, and manages some of the world's most powerful brands.

Publishers Weekly

Throughout his storied Silicon Valley career, Apple CEO and Pixar Studios founder Steve Jobs has been labeled, among other things, an egomaniac, a Zen Buddhist, a business mastermind, a sociopath and a music mogul. Blogger, author and Wired News editor Kahney, who has chronicled Apple in previous books (The Cult of Mac), attempts to plumb the depths of Jobs's prodigious mind in this engrossing biography. The author devotes much time to the sensational aspects of Jobs' life, including his demeaning and ferocious interactions with employees, his relentless high-mindedness and fanatical attention to detail, clearly demonstrating how his tyrannical and perfectionist impulses have have shaped the award-winning designs and consumer-friendly products that have made Apple a juggernaut. Though it doesn't penetrate the Mac man's psyche too deeply, and sections on tangential figures like Apple design guru Jonathan Ive and Apple Store visionary Ron Johnson can meander, those searching for a telling portrait of Jobs's management style and its impact on Apple will not be left wanting.

Silos Politics and Turf Wars or Wooden on Leadership

Silos, Politics, and Turf Wars: A Leadership Fable About Destroying the Barriers That Turn Colleagues Into Competitors

Author: Patrick M Lencioni

In yet another page-turner, New York Times best-selling author and acclaimed management expert Patrick Lencioni addresses the costly and maddening issue of silos, the barriers that create organizational politics. Silos devastate organizations, kill productivity, push good people out the door, and jeopardize the achievement of corporate goals.

As with his other books, Lencioni writes Silos, Politics, and Turf Wars as a fictional—but eerily realistic—story. The story is about Jude Cousins, an eager young management consultant struggling to launch his practice by solving one of the more universal and frustrating problems faced by his clients. Through trial and error, he develops a simple yet ground-breaking approach for helping them transform confusion and infighting into clarity and alignment.

Publishers Weekly

Marketing won't speak to engineering. Sales thinks production hogs the budget. Front desk believes back room's lazy. These sorts of turf wars, which turn outwardly unified companies into groupings of uncommunicative "silos," are the stuff of management lore. According to bestselling author Lencioni (The Five Dysfunctions of a Team), "they waste resources, kill productivity and jeopardize the achievement of goals"-they also drive workers into tizzies of frustration. Like his previous books, Lencioni's latest addresses the management problem through a fictional story; this one revolves around a self-employed consultant named Jude, who has to dismantle silos at an upscale hotel, a technology company and a hospital. Split into two sections, Lencioni's book first shows Jude discovering a solution to silos, then summarizes Jude's lessons into a strategy that readers can apply to any business. Lencioni's proposal is so full of common sense-namely, end turf wars by getting departments to rally around a common goal-that managers will be eager to apply it themselves. Just as refreshing is Lencioni's use of character and plot, which is far above average for the business genre. As sympathetic as Jude is, he makes Lencioni's management lessons memorable. (Mar.) Soundview Summary - Soundview Executive Book Summaries

According to bestselling author and management expert Patrick Lencioni, building a cohesive leadership team is the first critical step that an organization must take in order to give it the best chance of success. However, even when leadership teams become cohesive, there is another, more structural issue that often thwarts their efforts and creates unnecessary politics within an organization. That issue is silos.

Silos are nothing more than the barriers that surface between departments within an organization, causing people who are supposed to be on the same team to work against one another. And whether this phenomenon is called departmental politics, divisional rivalry or turf warfare, Lencioni writes, it is one of the most frustrating aspects of life in any sizable organization.

In most situations, he adds, silos rise up not because of what executives are doing purposefully, but rather because of what they are failing to do: provide themselves and their employees with a compelling context for working together. Without context, employees at all levels — especially executives — easily lose their way.

Even the most well-meaning, intelligent people get distracted and confused amid the endless list of tactical and administrative details that come their way every day, Lencioni points out. Pulled in many directions without a compass, they pursue seemingly worthwhile agendas under the assumption that it will be in the best interest of the organization as a whole.

But after a while, employees in different divisions begin to see their colleagues moving in different directions, and they begin to wonder why they aren't on board. Over time, their confusion turns into disappointment that eventually becomes resentment — even hostility — toward their supposed teammates. And then the worst thing of all happens — they start working against those colleagues on purpose!

The Silo Mentality
Lencioni writes that the maddening problem of silos exists, to different degrees, in most companies. And in too many of those companies, leaders who are frustrated by the silo mentality mistakenly attribute it to the immaturity and insecurity of employees who somehow just refuse to get along with one another.

But the fact is, Lencioni explains, most employees deep within an organization have a genuine interest in working well across divisions. That's because they feel the daily pain of departmental politics as they are left to fight bloody battles with their colleagues.

If there is a place where the blame for silos and politics belongs, Lencioni writes, it is at the top of an organization. Every departmental silo in any company can ultimately be traced back to the leaders of those departments who have failed to understand the interdependencies that must exist among the executive team, or who have failed to make those interdependencies clear to the people deeper in their own departments.

According to Lencioni, there is a simple and powerful way for leaders of any organization to create context around that interdependency: They must establish a thematic goal.

The Thematic Goal
Lencioni writes that a thematic goal is a single, qualitative focus that is shared by the entire leadership team, and ultimately, by the entire organization, and it applies for only a specified period of time.

To avoid politics and turf battles, Lencioni explains, executives must establish an unambiguously stated common goal, a single overriding them that remains the top priority of the entire leadership team for a given period of time. In turn, he adds, this thematic goal serves to align employees up and down the organization, and provides an objective tool for resetting direction when things get out of sync.

Key Elements
Lencioni explains that the key elements of a thematic goal include:

It is single. There can be only one true thematic goal in a given period.

It is qualitative. The thematic goal is not a number, and it is not specifically measurable. It is a general statement of a desired accomplishment.

It is time-bound. The thematic goal does not live beyond a fixed time period, because that would suggest that it is an ongoing objective.

It is shared. The thematic goal applies to everyone on the leadership team, regardless of his or her expertise or interest. Copyright © 2006 Soundview Executive Book Summaries

Wooden on Leadership: How to Create a Winning Organization

Author: John Wooden

"Team spirit, loyalty, enthusiasm, determination. . . . Acquire and keep these traits and success should follow."

--Coach John Wooden

John Wooden is without question one of the most respected and honored sports coaches in our nation's history. But it wasn't winning games that drove him; it was ensuring that, regardless of the final score, his players always put forth their utmost effort and performed to the best of their abilities.

One of the lesser-known aspects of Wooden is the notebooks in which, beginning in 1948, he regularly recorded his thoughts, inspirations, and life lessons. In Wooden on Leadership, the legendary coach and his longtime collaborator Steve Jamison combine the best of those notebooks with Wooden's far-more-celebrated Pyramid of Success to create a leadership skills guide designed to help anyone develop character, conviction, and remarkable achievement.

Whether discussing teamwork ("It takes 10 hands to score a basket"), organization ("Don't mistake activity for achievement"), or even discipline ("Use the carrot as a stick"), it constructs a masterful template for confronting limitations and achieving personal success in virtually any setting or situation.

John Wooden was the winner of 10 NCAA basketball championships in 12 years with the UCLA Bruins and was named Coach of the Century by ESPN. The only person to be inducted into basketball's Hall of Fame as both a player and a coach, he is the author of They Call Me Coach and Wooden: A Lifetime of Observations and Reflections On and Off the Court.

Steve Jamison is a popular columnist and speaker. A close confidante ofJohn Wooden, he is coauthor of the bestselling biography Wooden.

In Wooden on Leadership, the coach and his longtime collaborator Steve Jamison share Wooden's insights about motivating others, creating a coherent team and producing winning results. They also show how his leadership principles on teamwork, concentration and dealing with defeat, as well as his "Pyramid of Success," can be used to build a winning organization. The Yes Men or Getting Started with MS Outlook 2002

The Yes Men: The True Story of the End of the World Trade Organization

Author: Andy Bichlbaum

This is the companion book to The Yes Men, a United Artists movie coming late summer 2004. It follows two anti-corporate activist-pranksters as they impersonate the World Trade Organization on TV and at business conferences around the world.

The story begins with Andy and Mike setting up a website that looks just like that of the World Trade Organization. Some visitors don't notice the site is a fake, and send e-mail invitations meant for the real WTO. Mike and Andy play along with the ruse and soon find themselves attending important functions as WTO -representatives.

Delighted to speak as the organization they oppose, Andy and Mike don thrift-store suits and set out to shock their unwitting audiences with darkly comic satires on global free trade. Weirdly, the experts don't notice the joke and seem to agree with every terrible idea the two can come up with.

Exhausted by their failed attempts to shock, Mike and Andy change their strategy completely, and take a whole new approach for one final lecture.

The book is lavishly illustrated in full color throughout, featuring photographs of Mike and Andy getting deeper and deeper into their assumed identities. Also liberally dispensed are many of the hilarious e-mail exchanges between the Yes Men and various officials and individuals around the world who have asked their advice on issues of world trade.

The Yes Men are global authorities on "Identity Correction," the art of impersonating big-time criminals in order to publicly humiliate them. Their high-profile targets have included George Bush, who responded to their imposture by saying "there ought to be limits to freedom" and The World TradeOrganization, who called them "deplorable." The Yes Men currently have thousands of job openings.

Liberalism, Fascism, or Social Democracy: Social Classes and the Political Origins of Regimes in Interwar Europe

Author: Gregory M Luebbert

This work provides a sweeping historical analysis of the political development of Western Europe in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Arguing that the evolution of most Western European nations into liberal democracies, social democracies, or fascist regimes was attributable to a discrete set of social class alliances, the author explores the origins and outcomes of the political development in the individual nations. In Britain, France, and Switzerland, countries with a unified middle class, liberal forces established political hegemony before World War I. By coopting considerable sections of the working class with reforms that weakened union movements, liberals essentially excluded the fragmented working class from the political process, remaining in power throughout the inter-war period. In countries with a strong, cohesive working class and a fractured middle class, Luebbert points out, a liberal solution was impossible. In Norway, Sweden, Denmark, and Czechoslovakia, political coalitions of social democrats and the "family peasantry" emerged as a result of the First World War, leading to social democratic governments. In Italy, Spain, and Germany, on the other hand, the urban middle class united with a peasantry hostile to socialism to facilitate the rise of fascism.

"An exceptional piece of scholarship. It deserves to be required reading for any student of European politics or political development."--Journal of Politics
"Luebbert's book is an impressive achievement in its comparative scope and its unrelenting, tenacious defense of a clear analytical thesis."--American Political Science Review
"Comprehensive, original, beautifully argued."--MaryAnderson, Holy Names College

Inside the Arab World

Author: Michael Field

Precious oil and export markets, wars in Lebanon and the Persian Gulf, peace talks at the White House, terrorist eruptions: more now than ever, Arab affairs are the West's affair. And yet as we find ourselves increasingly enmeshed in its politics and economics, the Middle East remains a mystery to most of us, a world of dimly understood connections and impenetrable complexities. The Arab world at last becomes accessible in this book. The only study to include developments since the Gulf War and the historic pact between Israel and the PLO, Inside the Arab World gives us a complete and detailed picture of the region as it is today, as well as a clear sense of how Arab affairs have evolved and where they may lead.

Despite its abundance of oil, the Arab world has failed to produce a single successful economy. Michael Field, a recognized expert and longtime reporter on the Arab states, ably explores the cultural, political, and geographic reasons for this failure. Ranging from Algeria to the Gulf states to Egypt and Syria, he considers the fragmentation of society, the people's tolerance of bad government, corruption, and the deadening economic effect of Arab socialism. But he also shows how the region—influenced partly by exposure to Western media, partly by reforms imposed by creditors—is changing now, taking its first cautious steps toward democracy, whose opportunities so far have been most firmly grasped by Islamic fundamentalists.

Timely, thorough, and highly readable, this book offers much-needed insight into the Arab world as its politics and policies increasingly engage our own.

Library Journal

This is an important addition to the growing number of comprehensive surveys of the Arab world, written by Westerners who know the area well. Field is a journalist, most recently with the Financial Times; over the past 27 years, he has spent a great deal of time in the Middle East and has made hundreds of contacts. What makes his book unique, and especially valuable to researchers, is its focus on failure and reform in the various Arab states-an emphasis that requires economic and political analysis on top of the historical, social, and cultural narratives that often comprise the entirety of most other comprehensive works. For example, Field sees the Islamic fundamentalist movement as the result of economic failure and/or the need for political reform rather than as a strictly religious or cultural phenomenom. Field also covers the Gulf War and the Arab-Israeli peace process, making this book as timely as it is well written, fast-paced and nonjudgmental. While expressing the viewpoint of an objective Western observer, Field also manages to convey the various viewpoints of the Arabs observing the Westerner observing them-a much greater achievement. Highly recommended for academic and large public libraries.-Ruth K. Baacke, Whatcom Cty. Lib. Sys., Bellingham, Wash.

Modeling in Materials Processing

Author: Jonathan A Dantzig

While courses in materials processing cover modeling, they usually treat one particular class of materials, that is, polymers, metals, or ceramics. This text offers a new approach, presenting an integrated treatment of metallic and nonmetallic materials. The authors show that a common base of knowledge--specifically, the fundamentals of heat transfer and fluid mechanics--provides a unifying theme for these seemingly disparate areas. They emphasize understanding basic physical phenomena and knowing how to include them in a model. Students will learn how to use scaling analysis as a general tool for simplifying models and for obtaining rapid estimates of results. The book also includes selected numerical methods, a wealth of practical, realistic examples, and homework exercises.

The Aged Client and the Law or Microsoft Office XP Windows XP Edition Illustrated Introductory

The Aged Client and the Law

Author: John Regan

Medical advances are keeping people alive longer and, as a result, elderly people, their families and those who work with them are confronting new problems. For many, old age is the first time they must deal with government agencies, subsidies, benefit forms, lawyers, and the law. Seniors face difficulties and need someone to turn to for assistance in these matters.

In clear non-technical language, The Aged Client and the Law by John J. Regan explains the laws affecting the major concerns of older persons and their families. The book's two goals are to provide legal information regarding the major programs, sources, and methods for meeting the needs of older people for income, health care, and maintenance of autonomy, and to explore legal issues and problems caseworkers may encounter when assisting older clients. The broad coverage of legal concerns in this guide goes beyond mere health care issues. Sections describe:

-Social Security and public pensions

-Supplemental Security Income (SSI)

-private pensions and income tax benefits

-Medicare and health insurance

-Medicaid

-long-term care

-decision-making by and for the incapacitated

-intervention for the frail elderly

Regan provides straightforward and basic examples to facilitate understanding of the laws and regulations presented in The Aged Client and the Law. All sections emphasize client planning rather than litigation of abstract rights. The book is current, including the latest changes in Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid up to 1990. Providing basic legal information, Regan stresses the factors and issues the professional advisor should consider when dealing with the problems ofthe elderly.

Author: Rodney D D Fort

This unique book applies economic theory to the business of sports. It deals mainly with professional team sports (with a section devoted to college team sports), showing how supply and demand join at the market level, and how team owners act together through their leagues (or athletic departments through the NCAA) to facilitate their market power. This book will help the reader understand the business side of sports and how it impacts the games seen at the stadium or in the arena. Topics covered in this book are: demand, supply, and sports market outcomes; the market for talent and labor relations; government and the sports business; and college sports.
