Economic Behavior and Institutions or The Global Future

Economic Behavior and Institutions: Principles of Neoinstitutional Economics

Author: Thrainn Eggertsson

An important new research program has developed in economics that extends neoclassical economic theory in order to examine the effects of institutions on economic behavior. The body of work emerging from this new line of inquiry includes contributions from the various branches of economic theory, such as the economics of property rights, the theory of the firm, cliometrics and law and economics. This book is the first comprehensive survey of this research program, which the author terms "neoinstitutional economics." The author proposes a unified approach to this research, integrating the work of various contributors and emphasizing the common principles of inquiry that tie the work together. The theoretical discussion is accomplished by empirical studies dealing with a whole range of institutions and economic systems.

The Yes Men or Getting Started with MS Outlook 2002

The Yes Men: The True Story of the End of the World Trade Organization

Author: Andy Bichlbaum

This is the companion book to The Yes Men, a United Artists movie coming late summer 2004. It follows two anti-corporate activist-pranksters as they impersonate the World Trade Organization on TV and at business conferences around the world.

The story begins with Andy and Mike setting up a website that looks just like that of the World Trade Organization. Some visitors don't notice the site is a fake, and send e-mail invitations meant for the real WTO. Mike and Andy play along with the ruse and soon find themselves attending important functions as WTO -representatives.

Delighted to speak as the organization they oppose, Andy and Mike don thrift-store suits and set out to shock their unwitting audiences with darkly comic satires on global free trade. Weirdly, the experts don't notice the joke and seem to agree with every terrible idea the two can come up with.

Exhausted by their failed attempts to shock, Mike and Andy change their strategy completely, and take a whole new approach for one final lecture.

The book is lavishly illustrated in full color throughout, featuring photographs of Mike and Andy getting deeper and deeper into their assumed identities. Also liberally dispensed are many of the hilarious e-mail exchanges between the Yes Men and various officials and individuals around the world who have asked their advice on issues of world trade.

The Yes Men are global authorities on "Identity Correction," the art of impersonating big-time criminals in order to publicly humiliate them. Their high-profile targets have included George Bush, who responded to their imposture by saying "there ought to be limits to freedom" and The World TradeOrganization, who called them "deplorable." The Yes Men currently have thousands of job openings.

Liberalism, Fascism, or Social Democracy: Social Classes and the Political Origins of Regimes in Interwar Europe

Author: Gregory M Luebbert

This work provides a sweeping historical analysis of the political development of Western Europe in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Arguing that the evolution of most Western European nations into liberal democracies, social democracies, or fascist regimes was attributable to a discrete set of social class alliances, the author explores the origins and outcomes of the political development in the individual nations. In Britain, France, and Switzerland, countries with a unified middle class, liberal forces established political hegemony before World War I. By coopting considerable sections of the working class with reforms that weakened union movements, liberals essentially excluded the fragmented working class from the political process, remaining in power throughout the inter-war period. In countries with a strong, cohesive working class and a fractured middle class, Luebbert points out, a liberal solution was impossible. In Norway, Sweden, Denmark, and Czechoslovakia, political coalitions of social democrats and the "family peasantry" emerged as a result of the First World War, leading to social democratic governments. In Italy, Spain, and Germany, on the other hand, the urban middle class united with a peasantry hostile to socialism to facilitate the rise of fascism.

"An exceptional piece of scholarship. It deserves to be required reading for any student of European politics or political development."--Journal of Politics
"Luebbert's book is an impressive achievement in its comparative scope and its unrelenting, tenacious defense of a clear analytical thesis."--American Political Science Review
"Comprehensive, original, beautifully argued."--MaryAnderson, Holy Names College

Inside the Arab World

Author: Michael Field

Precious oil and export markets, wars in Lebanon and the Persian Gulf, peace talks at the White House, terrorist eruptions: more now than ever, Arab affairs are the West's affair. And yet as we find ourselves increasingly enmeshed in its politics and economics, the Middle East remains a mystery to most of us, a world of dimly understood connections and impenetrable complexities. The Arab world at last becomes accessible in this book. The only study to include developments since the Gulf War and the historic pact between Israel and the PLO, Inside the Arab World gives us a complete and detailed picture of the region as it is today, as well as a clear sense of how Arab affairs have evolved and where they may lead.

Despite its abundance of oil, the Arab world has failed to produce a single successful economy. Michael Field, a recognized expert and longtime reporter on the Arab states, ably explores the cultural, political, and geographic reasons for this failure. Ranging from Algeria to the Gulf states to Egypt and Syria, he considers the fragmentation of society, the people's tolerance of bad government, corruption, and the deadening economic effect of Arab socialism. But he also shows how the region—influenced partly by exposure to Western media, partly by reforms imposed by creditors—is changing now, taking its first cautious steps toward democracy, whose opportunities so far have been most firmly grasped by Islamic fundamentalists.

Timely, thorough, and highly readable, this book offers much-needed insight into the Arab world as its politics and policies increasingly engage our own.

Library Journal

This is an important addition to the growing number of comprehensive surveys of the Arab world, written by Westerners who know the area well. Field is a journalist, most recently with the Financial Times; over the past 27 years, he has spent a great deal of time in the Middle East and has made hundreds of contacts. What makes his book unique, and especially valuable to researchers, is its focus on failure and reform in the various Arab states-an emphasis that requires economic and political analysis on top of the historical, social, and cultural narratives that often comprise the entirety of most other comprehensive works. For example, Field sees the Islamic fundamentalist movement as the result of economic failure and/or the need for political reform rather than as a strictly religious or cultural phenomenom. Field also covers the Gulf War and the Arab-Israeli peace process, making this book as timely as it is well written, fast-paced and nonjudgmental. While expressing the viewpoint of an objective Western observer, Field also manages to convey the various viewpoints of the Arabs observing the Westerner observing them-a much greater achievement. Highly recommended for academic and large public libraries.-Ruth K. Baacke, Whatcom Cty. Lib. Sys., Bellingham, Wash.

Modeling in Materials Processing

Author: Jonathan A Dantzig

While courses in materials processing cover modeling, they usually treat one particular class of materials, that is, polymers, metals, or ceramics. This text offers a new approach, presenting an integrated treatment of metallic and nonmetallic materials. The authors show that a common base of knowledge--specifically, the fundamentals of heat transfer and fluid mechanics--provides a unifying theme for these seemingly disparate areas. They emphasize understanding basic physical phenomena and knowing how to include them in a model. Students will learn how to use scaling analysis as a general tool for simplifying models and for obtaining rapid estimates of results. The book also includes selected numerical methods, a wealth of practical, realistic examples, and homework exercises.

The Aged Client and the Law or Microsoft Office XP Windows XP Edition Illustrated Introductory

The Aged Client and the Law

Author: John Regan

Medical advances are keeping people alive longer and, as a result, elderly people, their families and those who work with them are confronting new problems. For many, old age is the first time they must deal with government agencies, subsidies, benefit forms, lawyers, and the law. Seniors face difficulties and need someone to turn to for assistance in these matters.

In clear non-technical language, The Aged Client and the Law by John J. Regan explains the laws affecting the major concerns of older persons and their families. The book's two goals are to provide legal information regarding the major programs, sources, and methods for meeting the needs of older people for income, health care, and maintenance of autonomy, and to explore legal issues and problems caseworkers may encounter when assisting older clients. The broad coverage of legal concerns in this guide goes beyond mere health care issues. Sections describe:

-Social Security and public pensions

-Supplemental Security Income (SSI)

-private pensions and income tax benefits

-Medicare and health insurance

-Medicaid

-long-term care

-decision-making by and for the incapacitated

-intervention for the frail elderly

Regan provides straightforward and basic examples to facilitate understanding of the laws and regulations presented in The Aged Client and the Law. All sections emphasize client planning rather than litigation of abstract rights. The book is current, including the latest changes in Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid up to 1990. Providing basic legal information, Regan stresses the factors and issues the professional advisor should consider when dealing with the problems ofthe elderly.

Written by leading experts in the fields of healthcare and nonprofit law, this comprehensive and vital resource has been completely revised and updated to present a clear view of complicated legal and tax issues. Topics covered in this book are: demand, supply, and sports market outcomes; the market for talent and labor relations; government and the sports business; and college sports. The Long Term Care Crisis or Community Based Nursing

The Long Term Care Crisis: Elders Trapped in the No-Care Zone

Author: Carroll L Estes

Recipient of Choice Magazine's 1994 Outstanding Academic Book Award What happens when efforts to contain spiraling costs collide with health and social services delivery in a competitive market? The unintended results can be alarming. Carroll L. Estes, James H. Swan, and Associates uncover the insidious relationship between recent transformations in hospital care financing and the manner in which older Americans now receive--or, more accurately, do not receive--health and social services in the community. The distinguished authors of The Long Term Care Crisis scrutinize the surprising and pervasive consequences of competition in the health care arena tempered by government attempts to correct an out-of-control system. The authors provide a rich and incisive analysis of the complex events and policies leading to the current crisis in long term care and suggest options to simultaneously revitalize the system and empower older Americans. For all who question the current state of the U.S. health care system, skyrocketing health care costs, and disappearing personal resources, The Long Term Care Crisis is a professional library must. Students, researchers, and professionals in the areas of aging sociology, social work, nursing, policy studies, health administration, communication, and policy will find The Long Term Care Crisis a revealing and exciting resource. "A forceful analysis of the inequities of the U.S. healthcare system, which particularly affect women and people of color." --Lou Glasse, President, Older Women's League "Beyond perceptive analysis of the problem of providing long term care, the authors present policy options that empower the elderly and provide equitable, compassionate care for Americans of all ages." --Maggie Kuhn, Founder and National Convener, Gray Panthers "Once again, Carroll Estes, our great medical sociologist, has given us a painful and invaluable portrait of old age in America in the no-care zone." --Robert N. Butler, M.D., Chairman, Department of Geriatrics, Mount Sinai Medical Center, New York "The absence of rational social policy on long term care is the greatest impediment to reform of the U.S. health care system. This volume documents the further deterioration of access to long term care, resulting from efforts to contain escalating costs of acute care, and points to the policy changes needed to meet national needs in the 21st Century." --Linda H. Aiken, Ph.D., Trustee Professor of Nursing, Professor of Sociology, Director, Center for Health Services and Policy Research University of Pennsylvania "A critically important emphasis in this volume is the goal of maintaining independence and empowerment of older persons. As the book carefully documents, we must recognize how the policy decisions of the past decade have eroded the social, community-based supports needed to maintain elders' independence, and move to correct these lacks." --T. Franklin Williams, M.D. Professor of Medicine Emeritus and of Community & Preventive Medicine University of Rochester Medical Center "This is an excellent, but dense work. . . . Its moral and social dimensions present a chilling scenario for the future. . . . An important book for a wide range of readers." --Choice "Carroll L. Estes is the premiere authority on the political economy of aging, and past writings have had a profound influence on the sociology and economics of aging. The Long Term Care Crisis is another in a long string of significant contributions to the macro understanding of social problems and aging. . . . [This book] is an excellent piece of scholarly literature. I would strongly recommend it for professors of gerontology and health care policy, students, academic and hospital libraries, C.E.O.'s who are responsible for hospitals, nursing homes, health care programs, adult day care programs, and senior center programs." --Clinical Gerontologist "The results of this ambitious study are presented in fifteen chapters divided into five sections and are a 'must-read' for anyone interested in planning community services for elderly people. The arguments also have more general applicability to other populations as well. . . . As a single text, this is an excellent resource." --Canadian Journal of Urban Research

Community Based Nursing: Foundation for Practice

Author: Ginger Armentrout

Focusing on the community and home health care, this new book includes an overview of nursing in the community.Responding to the shift in practice and curriculum, from institutional care to community-based care, this new book helps instructors integrate community health information into their specific nursing programs. Specific topics covered include an overview of the health care system, cultural diversity considerations in the health care setting, client teaching, home visiting, and future trends in community nursing.Nursing students, nurse practitioners.

Cheryl Lapp

This book gives an overview of assessment and practice issues in community settings for those nurse providers who are not normally prepared to deliver comprehensive community health services. The purpose is to provide an introduction to something called "community based nursing," not community health nursing. As explained, this is a response to the economic reality of healthcare delivery, which is cost containment. Because these outside forces have imposed upon our traditional vision of nursing, adaptation to rapidly changing systems is our challenge. As "sicker" patients are being discharged into the community sooner, providers have been mobilized to respond in new ways. It is intended for students of associate degree programs in nursing, and for hospital nurses who find themselves in home care situations. At times the discussion introduces concepts that may seem remote to this audience, such as the levels of prevention or the nature of paradigms. However, discussion is informative and may even stimulate the reader to explore professional nursing further. Where there are illustrations, they are helpful. Examples are sources of healthcare payments, the cultural phenomena assessment, and the epidemiologic triangle. There are several tables, and the book is arranged well to emphasize its content. The references reflect current literature of the mid to late 1990s. The book has a pleasant appearance in its handbook style, and succeeds in not overwhelming the reader. Several of the exercises offered look enjoyable for a small group setting. It covers a wide array of topics such as the healthcare system and its future trends, personal belief systems of the nurse, communicationskills, cultural diversity, and client teaching. Yet despite this range of content, the book is very readable, pleasant, and portable. There are many exercises and activities to stimulate thinking and promote discussion. This basic little book is not only written at a level appropriate for its audience, it is likely to hold their interest.

The Time Divide or Strategic Marketing

The Time Divide: Work, Family, and Gender Inequality

Author: Jerry A Jacobs

In a panoramic study that draws on diverse sources, Jerry Jacobs and Kathleen Gerson explain why and how time pressures have emerged and what we can do to alleviate them. In contrast to the conventional wisdom that all Americans are overworked, they show that time itself has become a form of social inequality that is dividing Americans in new ways—between the overworked and the underemployed, women and men, parents and non-parents. They piece together a compelling story of the increasing mismatch between our economic system and the needs of American families, sorting out important trends such as the rise of demanding jobs and the emergence of new pressures on dual earner families and single parents.

Comparing American workers with their European peers, Jacobs and Gerson also find that policies that are simultaneously family-friendly and gender equitable are not fully realized in any of the countries they examine. As a consequence, they argue that the United States needs to forge a new set of solutions that offer American workers new ways to integrate work and family life.
