Nursing Outcomes Classification (NOC)

Author: Sue Moorhead

This text standardizes the terminology and criteria for measurable or desirable outcomes as a result of interventions performed by nurses. Clinicians, students, educators, researchers, and administrators in a variety of clinical, educational and research venues can use the classification, which serves as an important focus for both cost containment and effective care. This new edition is even more comprehensive and includes specific indicators that can be used as intermediate outcomes or to evaluate and rate the patient in relation to outcome achievement.

  • Supplies 385 research-based nursing outcome labels to provide standardization of expected patient outcomes.
  • Provides links between NOC outcomes and NANDA nursing diagnoses to promote clinical decision-making.
  • Presents a definition, a list of indicators, a publication facts line, and references for each outcome.

  • Includes 58 brand-new outcome labels that address important issues such as burn healing and burn recovery, cancer management, preterm infant care, and drug abuse cessation behavior.
  • Provides 67 revised outcome labels that supply the most up-to-date information on a wide variety of outcomes, including caregiver stressors, asthma self-management, substance use control, and pain level.

Reviewer: Carole A. Kenner, RNC, DNS, FAAN (University of Oklahoma College of Nursing)
Description: This book presents another aspect of uniform language (not just for nurses) that can be easily integrated into electronic medical records. The linkages between NANDA, NIC, and Gordon's Functional Patterns is a very good way to assist the reader in applying the content to clinical and educational situations. The previous edition was published in 1997.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide students and practicing nurses with standardized outcome statements that can be adapted to any population or setting. The organizing structure of the book is based on the five levels of the taxonomy for outcome classification. This structure reinforces the narrative content. The book meets its worthy objectives.
Audience: The audience includes any health professionals caring for patients and their families. The emphasis is on nursing, but its applicability for interdisciplinary use by students or practicing professionals is strong. The editors are well known, respected experts in the field of unified language.
Features: The strength of this edition is the inclusion of 76 new and the retiring of six old outcomes based on evidence to support these changes. Use of research findings and field testing that has been done in the clinical setting reinforces the need for evidence to support our nursing practice. In addition, the editors acknowledge ongoing dialog with specialty groups to ensure the comprehensiveness and applicability of their outcomes. The emphasis on the need for cost containment and linkage with clinical effective outcomes is another strength. Much as we do not like the commercial aspects of healthcare, they are part of today's world. Standardized nursing languages also ensures our place as a profession in healthcare delivery and inclusion of our nursing elements into Nursing Minimum Data Sets. The definition of terms to start the reader on the outcomes path is a good teaching point to make sure everyone is one the same page. The book's organization walks the user through the basis of NOC, the linkages to NIC, NANDA, and Gordon's Functional Patterns, and then moves into the core outcomes for various specialties. The appendixes reflect revisions in NOC, new NANDA terminology, as well as the process of incorporating new outcomes into the taxonomy.
Assessment: NOC has been a standard for the past six years. There is no competition for the "gold standard" that emanates from the developers of this classification. It continues to hold to high standards of nursing practice and education.
